With his captivating instrument that is harp and guitar, Doan will perform traditional carols and songs that celebrate the winter solstice with guitar and flute duo Meadowlark and violinist Allen Ames in “Spirit of the Season,” Dec. 21 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Doan will bring onstage several antique models of the harp guitar, an instrument created more than 200 years ago. Additional strings, which are unstopped, allow for individual plucking.

“It has a wonderfully warm and enchanting sound,” Doan said from his home in Salem, Ore. “It’s perfect for Christmas music. It evokes light reflecting off snow.
