The should’ve-been-there shows of 2007

The concert scene may be winding down for Christmas, but there sure is a lot of reminiscing going on behind closed doors. We asked representatives from performance venues to relate some highlights for the year, and maybe share a story or two. With the dozens of shows local music lovers attend each year, it’s easy to forget some of those special musical moments. Some of the best memories have less to do with the music than with the stunts and stage banter that accompany it.

Those of you lucky enough to get tickets to the sold-out Decemberists show at the McDonald will recall the crowd pushing back to allow for a big circle and ‘њdance contest’ќ right in the middle of a packed-to-capacity hall. Another night in that same hall, a smaller audience might have noticed the young girl perched upon her boyfriend’s shoulders at the Arctic Monkeys show. She writhed and danced up there for several songs, occasionally showing the band her belly.

Her boyfriend had almost as much stamina as the youthful British band. How many of you are still waiting for your free meal from Burrito Boy that Aesop Rock promised Rob Sonic would deliver after that sold-out WOW Hall show back in October? This year marked a new stage in town, with the Indigo District expanding its usable space. In April, Minus the Bear christened the now 600-capacity (and all-ages for shows) venue.

Crowds are starting to understand the Indigo District’s new role in the music scene. Teenagers have gone there to bounce around to the frenetic hip-hop of Pigeon John or sit quietly in the corner to listen to David Bazan. The mix of fans is reminiscent of the WOW Hall, although the Indigo is not quite as crowded, at least not yet.
