Putting bad back into rock

They sing “Lips of an Angel,” but the five members of Hinder are on a mission to make rock anything but serene. The band entered the music scene fed up with the current state of rock. “Collectively, the whole band was just sick of all the music that was out,” bassist Mike Rodden said in a recent phone interview.

The depressing rock tunes on MTV — in the rare moments the cable network actually played music videos — were a stark departure from the party atmosphere glamorized in songs from the ’80s, Rodden added. So Hinder took on the recording industry with one simple goal. “We wanted to take the party away from rap,” Rodden said. That party comes to town Tuesday, when Hinder performs at the Columbus Civic Center with the Bad Boys of Rock Tour, which also features Papa Roach and 12 Stones. “It’s cool.

We’re all good friends,” Rodden said of the relationship between the bands on the tour. You probably know Hinder for songs like “Lips of an Angel” and “Better Than Me,” both of which appear on the band’s debut Universal Records disc, “Extreme Behavior,” released in 2005. Do the band members, who have been performing the same material for two and a half years, ever get tired of performing their songs? “I kind of thought I would,” Rodden said.

But it hasn’t happened yet, he explained, adding that the band is working on new material that will contain the same musical party vibe, but will have lyrical content different from what fans got in “Extreme Behavior.” The process is a collective effort, as the band uses songwriting as way to convey personal experiences in a manner to which fans can relate. “We all have something to do with the songs,” Rodden explained.
