Rock the Block festival among Rutgers Homecoming Weekend activities
The game takes place at noon on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, where the 1-5 Scarlet Knights host the 5-1 Connecticut Huskies. The public festival called “Rock the Block,” will take place between 3 and 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Buccleuch Park between College and Easton avenues in New Brunswick.
The event will include live music by The Nerds, a variety of local vendors, carnival-type games, inflatable rides, performances by Rutgers student groups, plus special appearances by the football team, marching band, and cheerleading and dance teams. A fireworks display will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a showing of the Disney movie “Wall-E” on a 40-foot screen set up on the park lawn.
“Rutgers is part of the community, and this gives the city of New Brunswick and Piscataway a chance to celebrate with us. It’s an opportunity for the people to see what the university has to offer,” said Donna Thornton, the vice president for alumni relations “The city has been fabulous in planning with us, and this is a way to thank them,” said Thornton. Weekend events will begin from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, when there will be an open house at university academic venues. Between 10 a.m.
and 1 p.m., there will be tours of the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses designed for high school juniors and seniors interested in learning more about Rutgers. Registration for these events is required and can be made by following the Homecoming Weekend link at www.rutgers.edu . Events Friday will conclude with MidKnight Madness at the College Avenue Gym between 10 and 11 p.m. The free event will feature the 2008-09 Rutgers Men’s Basketball Team.
