Fountain Valley writer chronicles the history of power pop

Ask John M. Borack to name the four pillars of power pop and you will quickly learn that Badfinger, Big Star, Cheap Trick and the Raspberries are widely hailed as essential to the genre. But if you are looking to explore a bit deeper, it’s best to pick up Borack’s newly released “Shake Some Action: The Ultimate Power Pop Guide,” a 200-page book published by Not Lame Recording Company.

“It’s been five years in the making from the original idea to writing it and compiling the (companion) CD,” the Fountain Valley resident said in a recent interview. Borack estimates he owns more than 4,000 CDs, with the majority of discs being of the power pop or pop rock variety.

Borack has penned columns for Goldmine and Amplifier magazines and is a recognized expert on pure pop, but knows there are plenty of aficionados who will argue with his observations and list of the 200 Greatest Power Pop Albums list that is the centerpiece of the book.

“It will likely lead to a lot of discussion and that’s good,” Borack said of “Shake Some Action.” While Borack is clearly the architect of the book’s wonderful and breezy approach, there is an impressive list of guest contributors whose voices fill out the volume.
