The relationship between music and activism is almost as old as music itself. David playing for King Saul to prevent him from snapping might qualify as the original protest song. In the вЂ30s, country and folk music exposed the plight of the poor man on a national level. Into the rock era, the folkist revival brought a social consciousness to rock music.

Borrowing heavily from the Woody Guthrie playbook, artists like Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan used popular music to help in the civil rights struggle of the вЂ60s. This spirit of social activism lies behind the Wake Up Chattanooga Benefit taking place this Saturday in the coffeehouse of First Christian Church at 650 McCallie Ave.

The event seeks to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless in our fair city as four rockin’ local bands entertain the crowd and local activists speak about what we can all do to help. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
