The Cure, Lavigne Shine in Otherwise Dull Latin MTV Gala
Technical difficulties and poor organization marked the generally spiritless presentation of the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2007, with the exception of a few brilliant moments provided by British rockers The Cure and Canadian singer Avril Lavigne. With a backdrop of torrential rain, the gala was held in the Mexican capital for the second straight year.
On a vast multi-level stage with giant white tubes looming in the background, the evening’s top winners, each taking home two awards, were the Mexicans Belinda for Best Solo Artist and Video of the Year, Camila for Best New Artist Inspiration and Revelation, Mana for Best Group and Artist of the Year, and Avril Lavigne for Best International Pop Artist and Song of the Year.
The occasion suffered a 15-minute interruption for technical problems apparently due to the effect of the heavy downpour on production equipment. Mexican artists took most of the spotlight at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2007 with a total of nine prizes. Booing was frequent during the gala and were mainly directed at Belinda, who led in candidacies with five but only won two categories. The youth group RBD came in for its share of jeers as well.
Even Mexican rock band Mana, winner of the Artist of the Year award - the most important of the night - got whistled at by a large part of the audience. On the other hand, generous applause went to Colombia’s Juanes, who sang his latest hit “Me Enamora” (She Makes Me Fall in Love), and was awarded the Agents of Change Award which honors artists who work in social projects and on behalf of the underprivileged.
