The album begins with three tripped-out songs, first half highlight “Astronomy Domine,” “Lucifer Sam” and “Matilda Daughter.” Barrett’s near nursery rhyme lyrics take center stage, and were novel at the time they were released. Because of Barrett’s shaky mental state, lyrics like “Jupiter and Saturn Oberon Miranda” would seem to make sense, and only in the context of this album do they. It is the instrumental centerpieces of “Pow R. Toc.

H” and “Interstellar Overdrive” that hint at the powers of the band to soundtrack a generation’s drug dalliances. They both may seem like they are completely unstructured, but both hint at a connection between the band that hints they were all on the same plane as one or all of them lost control and went off on solo tangents on the tracks.
