Modest band comes to Istanbul Friday, December 7, 2007
The National, an indie rock band from the US, comes to one of Istanbul’s famous bars, Babylon, for the first time after releasing their fourth album ‘Boxer.’ The band members are excited to perform in front of a Turkish audience ASLI SAРLAM ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News A down-to-earth, Brooklyn-based indie rock band, The National, will perform in Istanbul for the first time tonight.
Fans rushed to buy tickets as soon as the concert at Babylon, one of the best-known music clubs in Istanbul located in Asmalэmescit Tьnel, was announced, and tickets were sold out far in advance. The band, formed in 1999 in Ohio, United States, is comprised of two pairs of brothers, Aaron and Bryce Dessner and Scott and Bryan Devendorf, and Matt Berninger. Matt is the vocalist, Aaron plays guitar, bass and piano, Bryce plays guitar and piano, Bryan plays drums and Scott plays bass and guitar.
The lyrics are mostly written and sung by Matt in a distinctive, deep baritone. They released their first self-titled album “The National” in 2001 with a label called Brassland founded by a group of friends that included Aaron and Bryce of The National. First album for fun The band members are friends from high school and used to perform together just for fun, and they produced their first album in the same spirit of fun, Aaron said.
They used to work day jobs in the early years, and they performed few live shows before the release of their debut album. “We used to be more popular in Europe,” said Aaron, adding, “France is the first place where we got recognition and an audience without our first album being released. There were many people watching us when we performed.” Now that their audience is bigger in the U.S. they play quite often in New York, where they have the largest audience.
