It’s the season for music, and for charity
If one wants to get in the true rock ‘n’ roll giving spirit this season, you could do some serious “benefit-hopping” Friday night. Over three dozen area bands are donating their talents at three deserving fundraising concerts - perhaps unfortunately competing with each other on the night.
But, all are a short drive apart at Northern Kentucky clubs, and all feature outstanding lineups with some of the area’s best blues rockers and indie bands: “Homegrown for the Holidays” is a benefit for the Michael W. Bany Music Scholarship Fund, 8: 30 p.m. at the York Street Cafй, Newport.
Hosted by the Balance Allstars (Doug Perry, Jim Lawson, Roger Yeardley), the night will also feature a fun list of local guitar heroes and other musicians including Marcos Sastre, Steve Sigsbee, Jerry Hedge, Keith Little, Charlie Fletcher, Larry Bloomfield, Dave Hennesee and Rick Powell. Also on the bill Mike Fair and the Adventure Seekers and The Moxie Band. Suggested donation of $7 goes to the Bany fund.
The scholarship program was established in Bany’s memory after the well-known bass player was shot and killed in a robbery attempt in late December of 1995 after playing a gig on Main Street with the Goshorn Brothers. Over a dozen Cincinnati music students have been recipients of a Bany Scholarship. The Friends for Chris Walker hold a benefit Friday at Molly Malone’s, Covington, to help with the medical bills and rehab of Walker, who was left paralyzed following an Indiana auto accident.
