Hip-hop tour hands out financial advice

MIAMI, Oct. 21 (UPI) — Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons took his message of financial responsibility for young people to Florida. Simmons’ “Get Your Money Right” tour uses the star power of celebrities like R&B crooner Ne-Yo and Latin music star Joell Ortiz to tell young people the importance of sound financial planning, including budgeting and credit repair, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.

At Florida Memorial University Saturday, a crowd of about 1,000 teenagers and families attended the forum, sponsored by the Hip-hop Summit Action Network, the newspaper said. The tour could be good for attendees and hip-hop, sponsors said. Simmons said the events will give members of minority communities the chance to get knowledge they cannot get anywhere else. Ne-Yo said the tour is also a way to repair hip-hop’s image.

“People are only looking at the negative aspects of hip-hop and ignoring the positives,” he said.
