Gentle jazz with a social conscience
Rather than attack the Mugabe government with songs of revolution, Mtukudzi chooses to offer abstract descriptions of, and solutions to, the ills of his people. On the title cut of “Tsimba Itsoka” the songwriter advises people to take care in what paths they follow, making sure to stay away from evil. Another addresses hate while the final cut calls for solidarity among the suffering. Because the lyrics don’t pin any one situation to one space and time, Mtukudzi’s songs have a universal quality.
Through this universality, he avoids being arrested for his beliefs.
