Atlanta band City Sleeps finally scores with debut album

Atlanta is the proud home of artists like Usher, but now the eclectic Georgia city can add new alternative rock band City Sleeps to its list of credits. The five newcomers released their debut album, Not An Angel, last week. Contrary to the band’s heavy metal-hardcore rock look, theyseem to comfortably float between full-on rock and super radio-friendly alternative. The album is fun, catchy and sure to make some waves in the mainstream market.

City Sleeps has had a bumpy road to get their music heard and out to their fans. After running into conflicts with former label Maverick Records, the group was unable to release its debut album. Once back on the market, labels moved quickly to snatch up the talented rockers. Rock label Trustkill Records landed the contract and put an end to the band’s long-running industry frustrations. After years of waiting, City Sleeps is finally ready to show fans what they’re all about.

The album fills a wide spectrum of styles. This can be sort of dangerous for bands trying to be all things to all people, but City Sleeps seems to pull it off. The title track “Not An Angel” is the catchy, standout single that alternative rock listeners tend to gravitate toward without sounding like everything else already out. It’s a lot softer than everything else on the album, so it’s probably not the best representation of the album as a whole but it’s definitely one of the strongest tracks.

“Sleep With Me” is the only other song on the album that is of a similar style. Songs like “Bones,” “Andrea” and “Prototype” feature that heavy rock-screamo sound that fans expect from the group’s image. The screamo is very minimal on the album - thankfully. It’s used just enough to give the track the vibe of the genre while still allowing the lead singer’s talented voice to shine. This is a band to keep an eye on for any alternative rock fans.
