A special night at the symphony

Worse was the Schumann Violin Concerto. Soloist Jennifer Frautschi is a great musician, and she gave what may be the best performance possible of this long-forgotten and forgettable work. Despite Frautschi’s efforts, it doesn’t seem like anything can save the music.

Schumann wrote it as he was losing his mind - and his inspiration - near the end of his life, and except for a few moments in the slow movement and the occasional breath of life in the Polonaise finale, it was musically inert and terminally boring.
