R & B powerhouse Patti LaBelle performs at the Hard Rock on Oct. 20

Multi-award-winning rhythm and blues powerhouse Patti LaBelle will take a sweet and soulful turn in Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel Casino on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m., the casino has announced. In 1958, LaBelle formed a four-member girl group called the Ordettes. At the suggestion of a record executive, the Ordettes became Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. In 1962, the group scored their first Top 40 pop hit with the release of the doo-wop single, I Sold My Heart to the Junkman.

In 1964, they scored again with songs like Danny Boy and Down the Aisle and, in 1966, Patti recorded what would later become her signature version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. In 1970, Patti and the Bluebelles became simply LaBelle sporting a new attitude, vocal style, and a new wardrobe. The funkified band took on controversial social and political lyrics.

Their cult following had grown so much, that in October of that year, they were the first African-American contemporary act to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House. That December, they released their greatest record, Nightbirds, featuring their breakout hit, Lady Marmalade, which hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1975. Subsequent albums, Phoenix and Chameleon were hailed by music critics as experimental and groundbreaking, but failed to match its predecessor s success.

In 1977, Patti LaBelle released her self-titled debut noted for the stand-out ballad, You Are My Friend and Joy To Have Your Love. In the next year, she released one of her most acclaimed albums, Tasty, featuring the salsa hit Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile). Next up was It s Alright With Me featuring the disco classic Music Is My Way Of Life followed-by Released. Success mostly eluded LaBelle until early 1981, when she released the classic ballad, I Don t Go Shopping.
