‘њWe knew we were in a tricky situation because we had to show an entire career of music in one movie,’ќ says Apatow. ‘њEight months before we started shooting we started talking to composers that we knew and finding people we didn’t know and telling them titles of songs’¦bad ideas for songs. We would say, ‘Hey, we need a song called ‘Walk Hard’ and ten people would try’. Marshall Crenshaw wrote this great version of ‘Walk Hard’ [nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song].
Or we need this song called ‘Guilty as Charged’ where he’s mad at everyone who criticizes him. And he says, ‘I’m guilty of it all’, and people would take shots at it.’ќ Most of the songs were written by songwriters Dan Bern and Mike Viola. Viola had done the music for the rock group bio-pic ‘That Thing You Do’.
