World premiere for dance legend s dreamlike new work held in Johnson County
Paul Taylor s new De Sue os Que se Repiten does not just complement and inform its companion piece introduced earlier this year, De Sue os, it completes it. Local residents saw history made Friday at the Carlsen Center as the new piece ( Of Recurring Dreams in English) received its world premiere, together with its predecessor Of Dreams.
It was the first local premiere by the world s leading choreographer, who at a trim 77 beamed as he took to the stage at the end with his longtime creative team of lighting designer Jennifer Tipton and costume/set designer Santo Loquasto. We were doubly fortunate to see the two oddities together.
It s difficult to imagine either standing on its own, but together they form a substantial addition to the Taylor canon: visually arresting, potently enigmatic and deeply thought out even if the end effect was a tad stream-of-consciousness. Taylor s diptych juxtaposes symbols and rituals of pre-Columbian Mexico with folk images and Christian icons, yet is not devoid of narrative.
The music, arrangements of mostly Mexican folk, popular and symphonic music from Kronos Nuevo CD, had a dizzily eclectic character all its own.
