People like Lucky Dube never die, his spirit lives on!

By Rhoda Mashavave in Italy AS millions of fans across the world mourn Lucky Dube, the King of African Reggae, my mind goes back to a recent show he held with his group in Darmstadt, Germany. Little did I know that I was seeing the reggae star that I and many others from my country, Zimbabwe, and the world over loved so much for the last time! Dube and his group sent the crowd in Darmstadt dancing for the whole night.

As usual, he put up a great performance and his dancing girls were a marvel to watch. For almost a month, Dube toured Europe and the Darmstadt concert was very special for his German fans as it was the last performance in Germany before leaving for Switzerland. The group was also promoting their 2006 album Respect. As an avid Dube fan, I was shocked when I learnt of his death at the end of last week.

Words can not describe the pain and anger I felt as I read how he had been shot in front of his children. It is my hope that those responsible for the murder will be brought to book. Dube made a difference with his music by spreading peace, love and harmony across people of different cultures, colour and ages. The first time I learnt that Dube was coming to our small town, I was filled with joy. Dube visiting! - I could not believe it.

My heart was filled with excitement and I made a date with true African star. I also spread the word among fellow Zimbaweans living in Germany. At the concert I met a number of Africans who had come in their hundreds and we enjoyed the show of our lifetime. It was also refreshing meeting other Zimbaweans during the show because we spoke in our mother tongue and almost forgot that we were in Germany. The concert was special for me, especially as I was about to celebrate my birthday.
