Incubus’ ‘Look Alive’ plays like your neighbour’s vacation video Erin Harde, Nick Miliokas and Andrew Matte,

The video kicks off comparing the band’s progress to an Anais Nin quote before dawdling through some footage of the musicians surfing and skateboarding.

Framed as half documentary, half concert DVD, Look Alive is light on script and heavy on pictures. The band is followed through Iceland, Europe, Israel and Dubai playing in everything from stadiums to school gymnasiums. At first, it’s amusing to watch lead singer Brandon Boyd and bandmates play tourists in foreign nations, but eventually becomes as mundane as looking at your neighbour’s summer vacation photos.

Look Alive also gets sidelined by lead guitarist Michael Einziger’s carpel tunnel surgery, which gets too much air time, especially when it leads into an odd dream sequence. Even the most devout Incubus fan will flip through the filler and home movies to get to the meat of this package — the concert footage.

Boyd’s voice loses nothing in the live translation, as he belts out favourites like “Anna Molly,” “Megalomaniac” and “Dig.” The set list is almost completely tied to Grenades’ material, rarely pulling out old singes, a shame when they count “Drive,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Warning” among their hits. Even so, fans will be pleased that Incubus in concert has finally been captured on disc.
