Led Zepplica show cancelled for film shoot

OSHAWA — A Led Zeppelin tribute show scheduled to rock the General Motors Centre Tuesday night, has been cancelled to accommodate a film crew shooting Mike Myers’ latest comedy. The Led Zeppelin Experience featuring Led Zepplica is currently touring Southern Ontario, and was one of six events — other than hockey games — scheduled to take place at the GMC between now and December.

According to a media release, the Led Zeppelin Experience re-creates a 1970s concert vibe with big screens, live cameras, arena lighting and authentic performances of Zeppelin hits like Kashmir, Black Dog and Whole Lotta Love. Liz Armstrong, a promoter for the act, said the show was unexpectedly cancelled after producers for The Love Guru, starring Mike Myers, Jessica Alba, Ben Kingsley and Justin Timberlake, offered to buy out the venue.

“They had to push the production schedule back, and they needed this venue to shoot a critical scene on Tuesday,” she said. “They couldn’t reschedule the principal actors so they offered to buy out the house … this wasn’t due to lack of sales or anything like that.” In recent months, City councillors have expressed concern about sparse programming at the GMC and Mayor John Gray said it doesn’t look good to cancel any of the shows scheduled for the venue.

“Any time you make a cancellation it’s bad optics,” he said. “But I’m guessing they were looking at the bottom line and the movie shoot brought in the best financial return. It’s just a shame we couldn’t have accommodated both.” While the City of Oshawa owns the GMC, all operational decisions are made by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE). At press time, no one from MLSE was available to comment on the decision to cancel the concert.
