80% of Rap Music has Lyrics About Drugs, Alcohol. Dose.ca

Congratulations, rap music! The mothers of Middle America have another reason to hate you: research shows rap is the most likely genre of music to mention substance use, with a whopping 80 per cent of songs making note of doping up. But don’t think you cowboys are off the hook, either: 37 per cent of country music also mentioned drugs or alcohol.

R B and hip-hop proved to be less likely to party with only 20 per cent of songs being a bad influence, and rock ‘n’ roll proved to have the cleanest nose with only 14 per cent. Researchers at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, who apparently have way too much time on their hands, studied hundreds of popular songs, making note of substance use references, Reuters reports.

They found most drug and alcohol mentions were associated with other Dose.ca staff pastimes like partying, sex and violence. Rap had the most mentions of alcohol, marijuana and “non-specific” drugs, while country music most often made allusions to booze. According to the researchers, media has an influence on behaviour. “We’re learning that media affects a lot of different health behaviors,” assistant professor Dr. Brian Primack tells Reuters.

“Tobacco in movies, for example, is now known to lead to smoking. We started realizing adolescents are exposed to two and a half hours a day of music. What’s in the music?” The next step for the researchers is to try to determine if there is a relationship between lyrical content and behavior. We’ll update you on what they find. You know, if we aren’t too busy smoking up while listening to 50 Cent and slapping some ‘hos around.
