The Italian tenor, whose voice set the standard for tenors in the postwar era, died in September at the age of 71. “This is certainly intended to honor him and the passing of a great talent of our generation,” said R. Shaw Furlow, director of bands at Copiah-Lincoln and Ole Brook Wind Sympny conductor. The concert will also feature a contemporary symphony written for the wind ensemble by Robert W. Smith entitled “The Divine Comedy” based on Dante Aligheiri’s literary classic of the same name.
“It’s our first attempt to do a full symphony,” Furlow said. “It’s a major, major work.” The symphony is composed of volunteers from Copiah, Lawrence, Lincoln, Franklin and Pike counties. The Ole Brook Wind Symphony rehearses on Tuesday nights at Alexander Junior High School and welcomes new members. For more information on the concert or symphony, call Furlow at (601) 643-8353.
