Skydiggers’ Andy Maize performs Schumann in ‘Art of Time’ concert

The ensemble’s concerts “fuse artists and ideas from unlikely inspirations… popular, classical, old and new,” according to its artistic director, Andrew Burashko. “No concert series pushes the boundaries of music presentation quite like Art of Time,’” he said on the series’ website. The ensemble’s most recent production Source and Inspiration II, which takes place Dec.

14 and 15 at Harbourfront Centre’s Enwave Theatre, will feature one of classical music’s most influential pieces, Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat and 12 original songs, inspired by the Schumann Quintet, but written and performed by Canadian talent, including Martin Tielli (of the Rheostatics), Justin Rutledge, John Southworth, Amy Millan, David Wall, and Andy Maize of The Skydiggers fame, who happens to live locally on Gladstone Avenue.

Maize was introduced to Burashko by his wife and dancer Andrea Nann, who had collaborated with him in the past. Maize contributed to the first Source and Inspiration production last March and said such a task is challenging. “I’d never done anything like that before,” said the veteran singer/songwriter. “You have to listen to the music and draw inspiration from it. It’s a fantastic lesson.

It takes us out of our own skin.” For the majority of his 20-plus years, Maize has been writing music for the Skydiggers, billed as a country, folk, rock outfit. “For me, I’m a singer so I approach writing music from that point of view. I always try to stay true to my voice,” he said. However, that voice, he admits has changed over the years. “I’m trying to sing in a more emotional way. I try to be honest and not too narrowed,” he revealed.
