RCBB in concert Sunday at Pitt-Johnstown

By TOM LAVIS TLAVIS@TRIBDEM.COM All Broadway stars start somewhere, so why not at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center at Pitt-Johnstown? A promising generation of performers from the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) will join the River City Brass Band at 3 p.m. Sunday for its Broadway Babies concert in Richland Township.

The band is delighted to share the infectious energy and talent of these budding stars, said RCBB Music Director and Conductor Denis Colwell. We have worked with high school choirs in past shows, but this is quite different, Colwell said. These CAPA students are people identified as those who intend to make a living in the performance arts. The band had the opportunity to collaborate with CAPA students previously.

When River City Brass moved to its new home at Heinz Hall, the kids joined us on stage, Colwell said. That was a concert that welcomed us into the downtown Cultural District of Pittsburgh and these kids brought the house down. The music director said the band was so impressed that it wanted to include them as guest artists as soon as possible during a regular concert series. When you see them perform, it s easy to forget that they are high school students, Colwell said.

That is the level of professionalism they exhibit. CAPA students are musical theater majors who spend most of their day honing their skills in theater, voice, dance and performance. The show will open with the befitting tune Breezin Down Broadway, arranged by Goff Richards, which combines a number of Broadway hits, followed by Give My Regards to Broadway, which will feature the CAPA Broadway Babies. Their energy is contagious, Colwell said.
