NBSO concert Sunday features soloists with local ties
The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra gives audiences a chance to appreciate this masterpiece Sunday afternoon at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, under the baton of music director Dr. David MacKenzie. There are several completions of the score, and New Bedford music lovers will enjoy this piece, which was done by the noted Mozart scholar and pianist Robert Levin. The NBSO will be joined by members of the Chatham Chorale. Soloists include soprano Patrice Tiedemann, bass baritone T.
Steven Smith, tenor Matthew DiBattista, and mezzo Lara Wilson. Ms. Tiedemann, who lives in New Bedford, has been making a name for herself in Boston musical circles.
She made her Symphony Hall debut under the baton of Keith Lockhart in last season’s holiday concerts, and has sung prominent roles in the Boston Lyric Opera’s 2005 production of “The Little Prince” and last year’s Opera Boston production of Menotti’s “The Consul.” She also does musical theater: local audiences will remember her singing Mrs. Potts in “Beauty and the Beast” for the New Bedford Festival Theatre.
Trying for a part in the NBSO’s “Requiem,” she says with a laugh that “it’s the first time I showed up to audition for a part and the conductor had a pony tail and a leather jacket. I’m really looking forward to this performance. I’ve worked with all the other soloists, and they’re great colleagues. And the church is beautiful.” Ms. Tiedemann has previously sung the “Requiem” with the estimable Paul Madore Chorale. “There’s very little that I sing that I don’t like,” she says.
