Laugh, dance
Those days may be over, but there are other ways to herald in a new year, ranging from comedy shows to family fare to traditional New Year’s events. Oh, yes, if you want to relive your days as a disco diva, there are plenty of clubs locally and in Chicago. Comedy The Steve Cochran New Year’s Show is the perfect way to celebrate New Year’s Eve but still make it home to watch that guy who replaced Dick Clark do the countdown in New York’s Times Square.
Cochran, a WGN Radio personality, marks his fourth appearance at the Hemmens Cultural Center. Special guests include Tim Clue, his periodic sidekick, writer and comedian; Patti Vasquez, a comedian who is featured regularly at Zanies and on Comedy Central; and musician Megon McDonough, formerly of Four Bitchin’ Babes, whose latest solo album is Spirits in the Material World. “We do clean; everything has an edge to it but it’s a clean show,” Cochran said.
“It’s one of those things that people don’t have to worry about being offended. I’m proud of it.” Cochran said he likes doing the show in Elgin because of the people and the staff at the Hemmens, who meet his goofy requests. Clue describes the show as a family event with comedy — rated PG-13 — and music. “Bottom line is, we think there should be an event where you don’t have to break the bank, where you can have a real night out,” Clue said.
Cochran got his start in stand-up then went into radio. Cochran still does five to six shows a year and has opened for such acts as Jerry Seinfeld, Garry Shandling, Don Rickles and Cher. “She (Cher) let me wear one of her wigs on stage,” Cochran said. He’s had Seinfeld on his radio show and finds Rickles is gaining more popularity with his brand of comedy. Even Cochran’s 16-year-old son asked him if he had ever heard of Rickles, Cochran said.
