The Spielberg Song and Dance

It’s too bad the Golden Globes don’t do musical numbers. Because an excerpt from the workshop version of the upcoming Broadway musical adaptation of Catch Me If You Can , featuring Nathan Lane in the Tom Hanks role of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, would be the perfect lead-in to director Steven Spielberg collecting the HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award.

What with the 2005 musical The Color Purple and the progressing Catch adaptation, featuring music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman ( Hairspray ), we may be at the front end a whole litany of Spielberg films transferred to the boards. And that’s even if you don’t count Jaws: The Musical , which debuted at the 2004 Minneapolis Fringe Festival, and Jaws: The Melodrama Musical , an April 2006 offering of the Mosley Street Melodrama in Wichita, Kansas.

As the producers of the Catch musical get ready to hold open casting calls in Los Angeles (January 11th), Orlando (January 17th), New York (January 21st) and Chicago (January 23rd), we couldn’t help but ponder the next Spielberg film that should be made for the Great White Way. From the long list of possibilities, here’s the three that we came up with, skipping over child protagonist films like E.T. , Empire of the Sun and A.I. .
